Posted 03/03/05 ANDY GEHMAN NATM Board Member Profile
Andy Gehman is the President/CEO of MGS, Inc. in Denver, Pennsylvania. He began working at MGS in 1975, at the age of 10, as Andy says, "a dirt removal technician" or floor sweeper. He became President of MGS in 1999 after holding 95% of all current positions at the company in the interim years. Andy's role at MGS is to provide strategic and financial planning to support the growth plans of the MGS Sales Divisions. He is also responsible for championing selected corporate initiatives that MGS will focus on as a company to ensure the attainment of their goals. Some examples of those initiatives are management by goals philosophy, development and implementation of the quality management system, and development and implementation of a comprehensive training program. Andy is also responsible for investigating opportunities that are outside of MGS' current plans. Andy's father, Roland Gehman, has been the biggest influence in his life. According to Andy, "He has been a dedicated leader in our company, our industry, our church and our community throughout his life. His high personal standards, determination and integrity are apparent in all that he does." As part of Andy's hands-on education, he held 95% of the current positions at MGS. He supplemented his hands-on education with an undergraduate degree in Agricultural Business Management from Penn State University in 1998. He also earned an MBA from Penn State in 2000. Participating in the transition of the leadership from Roland to himself has been both the biggest challenge and the biggest accomplishment of Andy's career. They both viewed the process as a gradual transition instead of an event. The results of this were both frustrating and fantastic to both men. Andy was able to learn about and grow into his eventual position over a period of several years while his father was there to provide advice. In 2003, Andy was elected to the NATM Board of Directors. He was elected as the Association's Secretary/ Treasurer in 2004. He is currently serving as the Finance Committee Chairman and has been an active member of the Membership Committee. He will become Vice President after the 2005 Annual Convention. During the 2005-2006 term, he will chair the Association Relations Committee and also serve on the Finance Committee. Andy hopes that he will be able to help NATM transition from the small, entrepreneurial style organization to one of 1,000 members plus. Andy says, "The biggest challenge this industry faces is going to be focused around understanding, managing, and influencing the constant cry for more regulation of our industry." Andy believes that the best way to keep informed about issues that influence this industry is to be active in the NATM. NATM Bill Bernhardt Award Recipients
